Tortilla Jacks, at the corner of 17th and Lane in Topeka. It is just across from the Washburn University campus. I started going there 13 years ago and have never stopped. It was decorated in either the late 70's or early 80's, and never been touched. The decor leaves something to be desired, but the food is outta this world. This place hasn't changed one bit since my first day of college, when my friend was trying to be cool and collected and splattered me with Crustos. Nothing like a good first impression.
On a sadder note, my family's favorite donut shop on 21st in Topeka, Dimple Donuts, has been turned into a "Daylight Donuts." A moment of silence please......
So, I promised pictures of the illustrious "Birthday Box." Only a select few people have seen this box in the past, this a priveledge, a secret of sorts. Enjoy....
Just remember one thing, this is years of collecting....
What is inside is a real surprise, I'm not sure I even know....
I was wrong, I think we started it when my son was 3, because I found Spiderman in the box......
This is what is left after I took all the above crap out of the box......
I keep these two boxes in a separate closet in case of emergency, balloon and streamers.
You never know when you might need to throw a party.....
When I entered the birthday box to present it to you this morning, I found:
2 sets of "Star Wars" decorations
1 set of "Dora The Explorer"
1 set of "Spiderman"
1 set of "Twilight"
1 set of "Wow-Wow Wubbzy"
Many generic decorations for the everyday birthday party
My kids tend to get stuck on one party theme, so I have learned to just put stuff away for next year. I clean the tablecloths, neatly fold the birthday signs, and save the plates and napkins in a ziploc bag. I have also learned to buy Halloween costumes one size to big in case of repeats. Although I am not a boy scout, my motto is to "always be prepared."
I will post about the cake tomorrow, my hour for blogging is up, and I must get started on lollipops. Wishing you preparedness in the future....
